MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

65535 is the integer after 65534 and before 65536.

It is the maximum value of an unsigned 16-bit integer.[1]

In mathematics

[edit]

65535 is the sum of 20 through 215 (20 + 21 + 22 + ... + 215) and is therefore a repdigit in base 2 (1111111111111111), in base 4 (33333333), and in base 16 (FFFF).

It is the ninth number whose Euler totient has an aliquot sum that is : ,[2] and the twenty-eighth perfect totient number equal to the sum of its iterated totients.[3]

65535 is the fifteenth 626-gonal number, the fifth 6555-gonal number, and the third 21846-gonal number.

65535 is the product of the first four Fermat primes: 65535 = (2 + 1)(4 + 1)(16 + 1)(256 + 1). Because of this property, it is possible to construct with compass and straightedge a regular polygon with 65535 sides (see, constructible polygon).

In computing

[edit]
  • 65535 occurs frequently in the field of computing because it is (one less than 2 to the 16th power), which is the highest number that can be represented by an unsigned 16-bit binary number.[1] Some computer programming environments may have predefined constant values representing 65535, with names like MAX_UNSIGNED_SHORT.[4]
  • In older computers with processors having a 16-bit address bus such as the MOS Technology 6502 popular in the 1970s[5] and the Zilog Z80,[6] 65535 (FFFF16) is the highest addressable memory location, with 0 (000016) being the lowest. Such processors thus support at most 64 KiB of total byte-addressable memory.
  • In Internet protocols, 65535 is also the number of TCP and UDP ports available for use, since port 0 is reserved.[7]
  • In some implementations of Tiny BASIC, entering a command that divides any number by zero will return 65535.[a]
  • In Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac, 65535 is the highest line number that will be displayed.
  • In HTML, 65535 is the decimal value of the web color Aqua (#00FFFF)  .[11]
  • in Dragon Quest 1, this is the number of experience points needed to reach the maximum character level of 30.
  • In Fallout 4, level 65535 is the last possible level that the player can reach as there is no level cap. Gaining one more after this causes the game to crash.

Gothic War (535–554)

The Gothic War between the Byzantine Empire during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and the Ostrogoths (Goths) took place from 535 to 554 in the Italian Peninsula, Dalmatia, Sardinia, Sicily, and Corsica. It was the last of the Gothic wars against the Byzantine Empire. The war had its roots in Justinian's ambition to recover the provinces of the former Western Roman Empire, which had been lost to invading barbarian tribes during the Migration Period. The war followed the Byzantine reconquest of the diocese of Africa from the Vandals. Historians commonly divide the Gothic War into two phases. The first phase starts in 535 with the reconquest of Italy by the Byzantines with Belisarius as the commander-in-chief and ends in 540 with the fall of Ravenna, the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom. The second phase, which lasted from 540/541 to 554, featured a Gothic revival under Totila that was suppressed only after a long struggle by the Byzantine general Narses. The Byzantines also had to repel an invasion in 554 by the Franks, who were initially allies of the Byzantines but were also in secret with the Goths. In 554, Justinian promulgated a pragmatic sanction that prescribed Italy's new government. Several cities in northern Italy held out against Constantinople until 562. By the end of the war, Italy had been devastated and depopulated. It was seen as a pyrrhic victory for the Byzantines, who were unable to resist an invasion by the Lombards in 568, resulting in Constantinople permanently losing control of large parts of the Italian peninsula.
