MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

History

[edit]

9TV was launched on August 23, 2014, at 12:00 MN, as a replacement for Solar News Channel. Its first show as 9TV was a replay of Nightly News. Solar News, the network's news arm was rebranded as 9News. The rebranding of the network came after Antonio Cabangon Chua's acquisition of Tieng's share[1] of both STVNI (now known as Nine Media Corporation) and RPN to ALC Group of Companies due to the Tieng's loss of revenue after investing in RPN.

The newscasts, current affairs programs, and public service programs carried from the SNC format and the personnel were retained. It also beefed up their weekend programming including cartoons, infotainment programs, reality, and infomercials to cater more viewers.[2]

The rebranding stage took almost seven months until 9TV was rebranded into CNN Philippines that launched on March 16, 2015. 9News inked a partnership deal with international news network CNN.[3]

As part of the transition to CNN Philippines, 9TV temporarily used green screen as their news studio while their main newsroom and studio is under renovation in December 2014 and 9TV newscasts and current affairs programs began adopting CNN-themed graphics a week later (January 15, 2015). Some non-CNN programming (NBC and CBS shows), as well as the Home Shopping Network (now Shop TV) and Kids Weekend (now defunct CNN Philippines Junior) block were axed in the coming months.

CNN Philippines

CNN Philippines (abbreviated sometimes as CNN PH) was a Philippine free-to-air television network owned and operated by Nine Media Corporation, together with Radio Philippines Network (RPN), under a license from Warner Bros. Discovery Asia-Pacific. CNN Philippines was the fifth local franchise of CNN in Asia after CNN Indonesia, CNN Türk, CNN Arabic, and CNN-IBN (now CNN-News18 in India). It was formed after a brand licensing agreement with CNN Worldwide and Nine Media in 2014. It then launched on March 16, 2015, replacing 9TV, and was available on various platforms, including cable, satellite, live-streaming, and RPN's television stations. CNN Philippines' local programming was produced from the Worldwide Corporate Center in Mandaluyong. It maintained its analog transmitter located at the RPN Compound in Diliman, Quezon City, while digital transmission facilities were located at the Crestview Subdivision in Antipolo, Rizal. Citing financial losses, CNN Philippines ceased its operations on January 31, 2024. Its terrestrial television channel space was replaced by RPTV, a channel co-owned by Nine Media Corporation and TV5 Network, while its remaining news operations and assets were absorbed by Nine Media's indirect parent Broadreach Media Holdings to form NewsWatch Plus.
