MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Alex Dominique Kristensen Vanopslagh (born 17 October 1991)[1] is a French-born Danish politician. He is a member of the Folketing, and party leader of the Liberal Alliance. He is a former chairman of its youth wing, the Liberal Alliance Youth.

Early life and education

[edit]

Alex Vanopslagh, who was born in Épernay, France, moved to Denmark when he was five, and grew up in Struer.[2] His father is French and mother Danish. In 2009 he moved to Herning and completed high school in 2011. He originally wanted to be a journalist, but applied and failed the entrance exam to the Danish Media and Journalism School in Aarhus after taking the wrong bus.[3] He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Southern Denmark in Odense,[1] and a master's degree from the University of Copenhagen in 2016.[1] He won the Danish Debating Championship in 2016.[4]

Political career

[edit]

In 2014, he was elected leader of Liberal Alliance Youth, succeeding Rasmus Brygger. He was reelected in 2015 and did not stand for reelection in 2016.[2]

In autumn 2016, he was selected as lead candidate for the Liberal Alliance in the 2017 Copenhagen Municipality elections, and won a seat in the Copenhagen Municipal Council with 3,563 votes.[5][6]

In the 2019 general election, Vanopslagh was elected to the Folketing representing West Jutland constituency.[7] The election was catastrophic for the Liberal Alliance, which lost nine of thirteen seats and its leader Anders Samuelsen failing to be reelected. Following the defeat, Samuelsen resigned as leader of the party, and was succeeded by Vanopslagh.[8][9][10] After Vanopslagh's election as leader, it emerged that he had been involved in football violence as a youth, resulting in him being banned from FC Midtjylland's stadium and receiving a fine from police from a public order offence.[4]

Under Vanopslagh, the Liberal Alliance has seen a major rise in popularity, especially during campaigning for the 2022 Danish general election.[11] Much of Vanopslagh's campaigning has occurred on social media, in particular TikTok; he has been referred to as "The King of TikTok".[12] This campaigning is targeted primarily towards young voters, among whom Liberal Alliance is one of the most popular parties.[13] Vanopslagh led the party to their best ever result in the 2022 election, with the party gaining 10 new seats compared to the last election. Vanopslagh himself received 38,284 personal votes in East Jutland.[6]

In March 2026, during the run-up to the 2026 Danish general election, Vanopslagh admitted to having taken cocaine while leader of the Liberal Alliance, commenting that it had only happened twice at most; he denied having purchased cocaine himself.[15][16] The same month, the party's candidate in Lolland-Falster was removed from the party after publicly criticising Vanosplagh for his statement.[17]

Political views

[edit]

Vanopslagh has been a prominent critic of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her government, due to alleged attacks on fundamental institutions, rights and common sense.[18] He has referred to Frederiksen as "the worst news for our democracy and justice state since World War II".[19][20] During the mink case, Vanopslagh called for Frederiksen to resign[21] and criticized the Social Liberal Party for supposedly letting Frederiksen off the hook.[22]

In 2023, Vanopslagh argued in support of the legalisation of cocaine and the sale of it in pharmacies; he distanced himself from this statement during the 2026 general election and said it was not his party's policy.[17]

List of political parties in Denmark

This article lists political parties in Denmark. Denmark has a multi-party system, with two or three major parties complemented by several other significant parties. The government typically consists of a major party in coalition with, or supported by, a number of smaller parties. No party has won an outright majority since 1903. All governments since then have either been one-party minority governments or coalitions between two or more parties. The last majority government was the Cabinet of Hilmar Braunsgaard 1968−1971. The Ministry of the Interior and Housing registers and validates party names and the official party letters for all parties that participate in national elections. On ballots, the parties are sorted alphabetically by party letter.

Folketing

The Folketing (Danish: Folketinget [ˈfʌlkəˌtsʰe̝ŋˀð̩], lit. 'the People's Thing'), also known as the Parliament of Denmark or the Danish Parliament in English, is the unicameral national legislature (parliament) of the Kingdom of Denmark — Denmark proper together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Established in 1849, the Folketing was the lower house of the bicameral parliament called the Rigsdag until 1953; the upper house was the Landsting. The Folketing meets in Christiansborg Palace, on the island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen. It passes all laws, approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government. It is also responsible for adopting the state's budgets and approving the state's accounts. As set out in the Constitution of Denmark, the Folketing shares power with the reigning monarch. But in practice, the monarch's role is limited to signing laws passed by the legislature; this must be done within 30 days of adoption. The Folketing consists of 179 members; including two from Greenland and two from the Faroe Islands. General elections must be held every four years, but it is within the powers of the prime minister to ask the monarch to call for an election before the term has elapsed. On a vote of no confidence, the Folketing may force a single minister or the entire government to resign. Members are democratically elected by proportional representation: 135 directly in constituencies using the D'Hondt method, alongside 40 leveling seats. The Danish political system has traditionally generated coalitions. Most post-war governments have been minority coalitions ruling with the support of non-government parties. The first sitting of the house is usually attended by the king.
