MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

BrickLink Studio (also known as Studio 2.0) is a freeware CAD software developed by BrickLink which allows for the creation of virtual 3D models with Lego bricks. It replaced Lego Digital Designer as the official Lego design software.[1][2][3]

History

[edit]

It was released on BrickLink as an open beta on December 13, 2016.[4] The next major update to the program, version 2.0, was released in open beta on July 18, 2018. Multiple features were added to the program, including a photorealistic rendering option, and BrickLink integration for ordering parts to recreate the model physically, as well as the Instruction Maker.[5] The software runs on the game engine Unity.[6]

The software is used in the BrickLink Designer Program, where it serves as the venue through which submitted designs are built.[7] Studio Early Access, a version where new features are released early, also exists.[8]

Initially, Studio for their own parts library silently used LDraw Parts Library, developed by LDraw.org Community under Creative Commons Attribution license. After LDraw.org's admin contacted with the Studio developers the info about use of LDraw has been publicly added to the website and into software.[9]

In 2021, it was revealed that the Eyesight, a render engine of BrickLink Studio, is built from the Cycles renderer source developed by Blender Foundation (at the time, Cycles' source was already under Apache License, allowing it to be included in proprietary software, while Blender's source stays under GPL). But at the same time, BrickLink Studio's proprietary binary included some GPL-licensed source from Blender, at least parts of bf_blenlib source files, which are visible in the Studio binary file via hex editor. Later, the source of Eyesight was released on BrickLink site, as well as the modified sources of POV-Ray, FFmpeg and other software libraries used in Studio.[9][10][11]

In January 2022, The Lego Group announced that BrickLink Studio would replace Lego Digital Designer (LDD) as the official Lego building software going forward.[12][13] The Lego Group has specific dedicated BrickLink Studio builders.[14]

PartDesigner

[edit]

A companion software, PartDesigner, allows for the design of custom parts which can then be used in Studio. It also supports importing preexisting parts and 3D models, as well as applying decals to both.[15]

BrickLink Designer Program

The BrickLink Designer Program, now known simply as the Designer Program, is a crowdfunding program ran through BrickLink where a selection of sets designed by Lego fans are produced for a limited time. Builders use BrickLink Studio to create models which are then submitted. After a voting process and review, five designs are selected, which are then crowdfunded into production and pre-ordered for a limited period of time.

Lego Digital Designer

Lego Digital Designer is a discontinued CAD software made by Qube Software and the Lego Group. It allows people to design a virtual model using a selection of virtual Lego bricks. These models could be saved locally as well as be uploaded to the Lego website for sharing and ordering as a physical product. It was available for macOS and Windows, but only as a 32-bit application, which means that it didn't run on newer versions of macOS. The program allowed users to build models using virtual Lego bricks, in a computer-aided design like manner. Until 16 January 2012, these could be uploaded, along with instructions and a box design, to the Lego Design byME website, from where the models could be ordered for delivery as a real, packaged set. Users could also take screenshots of their models and store the models on their computer in an .LXF file. On 9 November 2011, Lego declared that the Design byME service was going to end on 16 January 2012, due to its failure to meet quality expectations and for being too complex. In its absence, custom brick orders have had to be made via the Pick a Brick service. The closing of Design byME has not affected the ability of users to print custom instructions for their models. On 21 January 2016, Lego announced the project had been defunded, and would not receive any more significant updates, although it continued to receive updates occasionally. In early 2022, Lego Digital Designer was officially discontinued, with BrickLink Studio becoming its replacement. A special version of Lego Digital Designer (Hollywood Edition) was used in the making of the Lego Movie franchise. The Hollywood Edition has also been used in the creation of Forza Horizon 4 - Lego Speed Champions.
