The California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) is a state cabinet-level agency within the government of California. The mission of CalEPA is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality. The current Secretary for Environmental Protection (Secretary of CalEPA) is Yana Garcia, (formerly Jared Blumenfeld), and is a member of Governor Gavin Newsom's cabinet. The Office of the Secretary heads CalEPA and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of one office, two boards, and three departments dedicated to improving California's environment. The Secretary of CalEPA is also directly responsible for coordinating the administration of the Unified Program and certifying Unified Program Agencies. The CalEPA Unified Program coordinates, and makes consistent the administrative requirements, permits, inspections, and enforcement activities of six environmental and emergency response programs. The state agencies responsible for these programs set the standards for their program while local governments implement the standards. To date, there are 83 Certified Unified Program Agencies (CUPAs), who are accountable for carrying out responsibilities previously handled by approximately 1,300 different state and local agencies.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, commonly referred to as OEHHA (pronounced oh-EEE-ha), is a specialized department within the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). OEHHA is the lead state agency for the assessment of health risks posed by environmental contaminants. OEHHA evaluates harmful chemicals and other environmental hazards, such as extreme heat, to understand interconnected environmental health burdens faced by individuals and communities in California. This allows OEHHA to play a critical and unique role—providing independent analyses to inform science-based decision making. As CalEPA’s scientific adviser, OEHHA works within CalEPA and across state government, with other state and federal agencies, businesses, community-based organizations, and communities and Native American Tribes across California to develop actionable science that protects public health, especially for those facing multiple environmental hazards. OEHHA's current director is Dr. Kris Thayer, who was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom on April 29, 2025. Previously, Dr. Lauren Zeise directed OEHHA from 2015 until 2024.

Before the 1921 destruction of Tulsa’s Greenwood District, Black residents had created a remarkable center of business and community life. The district included stores, professional offices, entertainment venues and homes owned by Black citizens. Understanding Greenwood means learning what was built—not only what was burned.
