MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

China Post, officially the China Post Group Corporation,[4] is the national postal service corporation of the People's Republic of China. It is incorporated as a state-owned enterprise.

China Post shares its office with the sub-ministry-level government agency State Post Bureau, which regulates the national postal industry.

History

[edit]

The current postal service of People's Republic of China was established in 1949. It replaced the Chunghwa Post in mainland China in 1949, as well as in the Universal Postal Union in 1972. It was formerly administered by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

China Post is directly supervised by the State Post Bureau which has overall responsibility for regulating postal service in China. The State Post Bureau operates under the State Council of China.[5]

China Post Service

[edit]

International services for China Post include Small Parcel, Large Package and EMS. The Small parcel and large package of China Post can be tracked if registered. According to transportation methods, it can be divided into three categories: Air Parcel, Surface Air Lift (SAL) Parcel, and Surface Parcel. China Post air mail/parcel is the most popular because it is cheap and convenient. EMS is faster than China Post Mail but more expensive.[7]

The average delivery speed depends on the type of service and the trade and communication links with the destination country of the cargo or parcel. For instance, the delivery time for cargo from China to the USA, regardless of the service type, is approximately 19 days.[8]

China Post does currently not offer shipping by boat to the United States from Mainland China. This policy went into effect November 2021.[citation needed]

South China Morning Post

The South China Morning Post (SCMP), with its Sunday edition, the Sunday Morning Post, is a Hong Kong–based English-language newspaper owned by Alibaba Group. Founded in 1903 by Tse Tsan-tai and Alfred Cunningham, it has remained Hong Kong's newspaper of record since British colonial rule. Editor-in-chief Tammy Tam succeeded Wang Xiangwei in 2016. The SCMP prints paper editions in Hong Kong and operates an online news website that is blocked in mainland China. The newspaper's circulation has been relatively stable for years, totaling about 100,000 daily copies as of 2015. In a 2019 survey by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the SCMP was regarded relatively as the most credible paid newspaper in Hong Kong. The Guardian has described the SCMP as "Hong Kong's most prestigious English-language newspaper," and it reaches 35 million monthly readers across multiple platforms (as of September 2024). The SCMP was owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation from 1986 until it was acquired by Malaysian real estate tycoon Robert Kuok in 1993. On 5 April 2016, Alibaba Group acquired the media properties of the SCMP Group, including the SCMP. In January 2017, former Digg CEO Gary Liu became the SCMP's chief executive officer. Since the change of ownership in 2016, concerns have been raised about the paper's editorial independence and self-censorship. Critics, including The New York Times, Der Spiegel, and The Atlantic have alleged that the paper is on a mission to promote China's soft power abroad. Academic studies have found that the newspaper has since shifted its editorial stance closer to a position of the Chinese government and portrays the country in a positive light. A 2021 content analysis found SCMP to be a more effective conveyor of China's soft power than state media due to its tone and style.
