The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

European Foundation for Management Development

The European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) is an international not-for-profit association based in Brussels, Belgium. It is Europe's largest network association in the field of management development with over 990 member organizations from academia, business, public service and consultancy in 95 countries (as of August 2025). EFMD provides a forum for networking in management development. EFMD operates the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), which is one of the major international systems of quality assessment, improvement, and accreditation of higher education institutions in management and business administration. It is comparable to its American equivalent Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and provides a forum for information, research, networking and debate on innovation and best practice in management development. The foundation also runs other accreditations and certifications for business schools, including the EFMD Programme Accreditation System (formerly EPAS) for individual programmes, the EFMD Deans Across Frontiers development programme (EDAF), and the Business School Impact System (BSIS). For corporate learning functions, it offers the Corporate Learning Improvement Process (CLIP) accreditation and the Learning Impact for Today and Tomorrow (LIFT) certification.

EFMD Quality Improvement System

The EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) is a business school accreditation run by the Brussels-based European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). EQUIS accredits higher education institutions of management and business administration, and is considered one of the triple accreditation. As of September 2025, EQUIS has accredited 228 institutions in 45 countries around the world. In 2022, EQUIS suspended all higher education institutions in Russia from its ranking.

Telecom Business School

Institut Mines-Télécom Business School (formerly known as INT Management from its foundation in 1979 to its rebranding in 2009 then Telecom Business School from 2009 to 2018) is a French state-funded Management School, a member of Institut Mines-Télécom, the biggest group of engineering and management graduate schools in France. It is also a member of the Management School Chapter of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles, of EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development), AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and accredited by the Association of MBAs for its Masters in Management Program. The business school was initially founded as the corporate university of Orange Group, the first telecom operator in France and formerly a public company. It is now fully independent from Orange though many partnerships remain in research, training and other different programmes. The school offers programmes taught in French or English, from bachelor level to PhD. Its main programme is the Masters in Management programme (aka Programme Grande École). The graduates from this programme are highly reputed among recruiters in France and abroad for their ability to work with engineers. It was ranked 75th (2019) by the Financial Times.

Paris School of Business

The Paris School of Business (PSB), formerly ESG Management School, is a business school and a grande école located in Paris and Rennes in France. It offers BBA, MBA, MSc, MIM, DBA, and executive education courses in English and French. PSB is a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles. It is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Association of MBAs, and it has programme accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development for its Master in Management course.
