MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Fractal is an instant messaging client and collaboration software for the GNOME desktop based on the Matrix protocol.

It is free software under the GNU General Public License version 3. Fractal can be installed on various Linux distributions via Flathub, which is the recommended installation method,[2] although some distributions provide packages through their official repositories.

Features

[edit]

Fractal integrates well into the GNOME desktop with a clean and easy-to-use user interface design that is optimized for collaboration in big groups.[3] It implements end-to-end encryption[4] but lacks support for audio/video calls.[5] The user interface targets both smartphones and desktop systems and adapts to different screen sizes and formats.[6][7]

Architecture

[edit]

Fractal is written in Rust and has a graphical user interface that, like software for GNOME, is based on the GTK widget toolkit. For the adaptive user interface, it uses a software library called Libadwaita.[8] Logon credentials can be stored in any local password manager that provides the Secret Service API.[3]

History

[edit]

The first code was committed to Fest (formerly known as ruma-gtk) on December 29, 2016, from which the Fractal codebase was forked by Daniel García Moreno in August 2017.[9] For the first release (v0.1.0) on November 10, 2017, it was called Guillotine.

With the release of version 0.1.22 on March 27, 2018, it entered beta status. With GNOME version 3.30 of September 5, 2018, it reached release status.

Over that summer, two students worked on Fractal, which was sponsored as part of the Google Summer of Code program, including the development of localization and spell-checking support.[10] Computer manufacturer Purism was working to integrate it into the crowd-funded Linux smartphone Librem 5,[11] and sponsored the development of some features such as support for Matrix' end-to-end encryption (E2EE) that was standardized in 2018. E2EE was implemented as a separate software module whose basic functionality was available by autumn 2018.[12]

In 2021, a rewrite of Fractal was sponsored by NLnet. The goal was to base it on the Matrix Rust SDK which would then enable the software to fully support Matrix' end-to-end-encryption.[13] The rewrite took two years and resulted in Fractal version 5.[8]

Alien Arena

Alien Arena (initially CodeRED: Alien Arena) is an open-source, stand-alone first-person shooter video game. Begun by COR Entertainment in 2004, the game combines a 1950s-era sci-fi atmosphere with gameplay similar to the Quake, Doom, and Unreal Tournament series. Alien Arena focuses mainly on online multiplayer action, although it does contain single-player matches against bots. Alien Arena has been released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD. While the game's content is proprietary freeware, prohibiting commercial re-sale, the CRX engine is open source. In 2013 the assets license was loosened somewhat, which allowed the game package to be included in certain Linux distributions, such as Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu. Since July 2023, Alien Arena is available on the Linux App Store Flathub. Since August 2023, Alien Arena is also available for free on the indie games website itch.io.

Software

Software (SW) consists of computer programs that instruct the execution of a computer. Software also includes design documents and specifications. The history of software is closely tied to the development of digital computers in the mid-20th century. Early programs were written in the machine language specific to the hardware. The introduction of high-level programming languages in 1958 allowed for more human-readable instructions, making software development easier and more portable across different computer architectures. Software in a programming language is run through a compiler or interpreter to execute on the architecture's hardware. Over time, software has become complex, owing to developments in networking, operating systems, and databases. Software can generally be categorized into two main types: operating systems, which manage hardware resources and provide services for applications application software, which performs specific tasks for users The rise of cloud computing has introduced the new software delivery model software as a service (SaaS). In SaaS, applications are hosted by a provider and accessed over the Internet. The process of developing software involves several stages. The stages include software design, programming, testing, release, and maintenance. Software quality assurance and security are critical aspects of software development, as bugs and security vulnerabilities can lead to system failures and security breaches. Additionally, legal issues such as software licenses and intellectual property rights play a significant role in the distribution of software products.

Soulseek

Soulseek is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing network and application. It is known mostly for the exchange of music, though it can be used for other file types as well. The current Soulseek network, hosted on the client SoulseekQt, is the second to have been in operation; the older network, used up to version 156 of the client, was shut down after significant user inactivity. Version 157 of the client was the last for Microsoft Windows only, and work on it ceased in 2008. SoulseekQt is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and has different functionality to the 157 client interface.
