MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

As of 2025, it had a valuation of $7.2 billion.[5]

History

[edit]

The company was founded in 2019 in Palo Alto, California.[6]

In September 2021, Glean introduced its assistive search tool, designed to pull together information from dozens of disparate applications, streamlining access to critical data across various platforms, to the market.[6][7]

In February 2025, the company reported reaching $100 million in annual recurring revenue.[8]

Glean reported reaching $200 million in annual recurring revenue in December 2025, doubling its ARR in nine months.[9]

At that time, the company also announced its agent platform, designed to automate workplace tasks beyond search. The platform became generally available in May 2025.[10]

In September 2025, Glean introduced a third-generation Glean Assistant and an Enterprise Graph focused on personalization and multi-step task execution.[11][12]

It was named CNBC's top 50 disruptor in 2025.[13]

Glean announced its plans in April 2026 to open an office in Nashville, Tennessee, for its corporate sales division. The office was expected to employ 65 people initially, with the company planning to add 35 additional positions by the end of the year.[14]

By 2026, Glean shifted its focus from enterprise search toward connecting AI models with enterprise systems and data.[15]

Funding rounds

[edit]

In March 2019, shortly after its establishment, Glean raised $15 million in Series A funding co-led by Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed, which included participation from the Slack Fund.[16][17][18] In March 2021, the company closed a Series B funding round of $40M led by General Catalyst.[19][20]

In May 2022, the company secured a $100M Series C led by Sequoia Capital at a $1B valuation and hit the Unicorn status.[21][22] In February 2024, Glean raised over $200 million in Series D funding at a $2.2B valuation.[23]

In September 2024, Glean raised over $260 million in Series E funding, co-led by Altimeter Capital and DST Global,[24][25] taking its valuation to $4.6 billion.[26]

TipTop Technologies

TipTop Technologies is a real-time web and social search engine with a platform for semantic analysis of natural language. Tip-Top Search provides results capturing individual and group sentiment, opinions, and experiences there from the content of various sorts such as real-time messages from Twitter or consumer product reviews on Amazon.com. TipTop Technologies and ITC Infotech collaborated to create a search interface suitable for both enterprise and consumer applications. Tip-Top's products are part of the "emerging Web 3.0 applications which use semantic technologies to augment the underlying Web system's functionalities." Their main product is 360, an AI tool that incorporates multiple AI applications under one wing. Jonathan AlBright professor at Elon University, found videos generated by TipTop Technologies software on YouTube in his research into artificial intelligence, described it as AI-generated "fake news". Through semantic analysis of large data sets, TipTop gleaned behavioral insights from Tweets around events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Gifting, the Super Bowl, and the Oscar Nominees for the Academy Awards coverage. Sentiment analysis, concept trend tracking, and real-time market research are other applications included in the TipTop Search product. TipTop's insight engine solves the problem of real-time data noise, and its ability to "sort the 'good tweets' from the 'bad tweets' when it comes to a product, service, or a region..." In addition, products like TipTop Shopping with customizable search widgets bring together consumer reviews, social search, and sentiment analysis enabling product comparisons across attributes like the overall value and aiding purchasing decisions through user-driven product tips and pits. TipTop Finance adds another complexity to real-time search results by incorporating corporate sentiment, company stock tickers, and social media into TipTop's existing social search platform. Additional success applying semantic technologies has been with polling, "if you compare these Gallup results with TipTop, a sentiment engine based on Twitter, the results are not way off. It does surprise you but it tells me that sentiment analysis in case of public opinion about a burning social issue or a famous personality is relatively easier." With the increasing amount of unstructured, opinion-oriented, and user-generated content available on the Web, TipTop's technology aims to make sense of all this data, and deliver it in a useful way for consumer and enterprise users alike. TipTop Technologies is a privately held company with its headquarters in the San Francisco Bay Area, and team members are located globally.
