MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Santa Luċija, Gozo

Santa Luċija is a hamlet in Kerċem, in Gozo Island, Malta. The hamlet takes its name from the church situated in the middle of the hamlet. The original chapel dedicated to St Lucy was recorded by inquisitor Pietro Dusina in 1575 during his apostolic visitation. Santa Luċija is inhabited by country folk with a few old houses built around the church. The local feast in honour of Saint Lucy is celebrated every year on the Sunday closest to the 13th of December, the liturgical feats day of the saint. It has also become a tradition to celebrate the feast day by the Lucia procession or Festival of Light, typical to Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden. Lucia buns are also made on this day. Santa Luċija is unique in Gozo, with its picturesque square and traditions. The village square is marked by a traditional stone cross. The village is right next door to Kercem and boasts some stunning countryside. The area was once known for its fresh water springs and is still one of the greenest areas on Gozo. Santa Luċija is bordered by Victoria and Kerċem. Accessible from the hamlet is the Ghajn Abdul plateau which goes up to Mixta caves, the site of the earliest settlement in Gozo. One can also access the Saint Raphael Lake and from there, a path in the fields parallel to the cliffs leads to Ras il-Wardija, the site of a Punic settlement that included a small temple.

Żebbuġ, Gozo

Żebbuġ (Maltese: Iż-Żebbuġ) is a village and an administrative unit of Malta, in the northwest coast of the island of Gozo. It is located close to Għarb and Għasri and is built on two hilltop plateaus, Ta' Abram and Ix-Xagħra taż-Żebbuġ. The fishing port and tourist resort of Marsalforn lies within the Żebbuġ Council. The population of Żebbuġ was 3,688 in July 2024. This included 2,076 males and 1,612 females; 1,948 Maltese nationals and 1,740 foreign nationals. This makes it the fifth largest in Gozo, after Xewkija. With an area of 7.6 km2, Żebbuġ is the largest local council in Gozo by land area. The word Żebbuġ means "wild olive trees", a crop for which the village used to be noted, although nowadays very few olive trees remain on the slopes of Żebbuġ. The village is also well known for its fine lacework and its nearby coastal beauty spots.
