MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Raster graphics

In computer graphics and digital photography, a raster graphic, raster image, or simply raster is a digital image made up of a rectangular grid of tiny colored (usually square) so-called pixels. Unlike vector graphics which use mathematical formulas to describe shapes and lines, raster images store the exact color of each pixel, making them ideal for photographs and images with complex colors and details. Raster images are characterized by their dimensions (width and height in pixels) and color depth (the number of bits per pixel). They can be displayed on computer displays, printed on paper, or viewed on other media, and are stored in various image file formats. The printing and prepress industries know raster graphics as contones (from "continuous tones"). In contrast, line art is usually implemented as vector graphics in digital systems. Many raster manipulations map directly onto the mathematical formalisms of linear algebra, where mathematical objects of matrix structure are of central concern. Raster or gridded data may be the result of a gridding procedure.

Vector graphics

Vector graphics are a form of computer graphics in which visual images are created directly from geometric shapes defined on a Cartesian plane, such as points, lines, curves and polygons. The associated mechanisms may include vector display and printing hardware, vector data models and file formats, as well as the software based on these data models (especially graphic design software, computer-aided design, and geographic information systems). Vector graphics are an alternative to raster or bitmap graphics, with each having advantages and disadvantages in specific situations. While vector hardware has largely disappeared in favor of raster-based monitors and printers, vector data and software continue to be widely used, especially when a high degree of geometric precision is required, and when complex information can be decomposed into simple geometric primitives. Thus, it is the preferred model for domains such as engineering, architecture, surveying, 3D rendering, and typography, but is entirely inappropriate for applications such as photography and remote sensing, where raster is more effective and efficient. Some application domains, such as geographic information systems (GIS) and graphic design, use both vector and raster graphics at times, depending on purpose. Vector graphics are based on the mathematics of analytic or coordinate geometry, and is not related to other mathematical uses of the term vector. This can lead to some confusion in disciplines in which both meanings are used.

BMP file format

The BMP file format, also known as bitmap image file, the Windows Bitmap file format, or simply bitmap, is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images, independently of the display device (such as a graphics adapter). The underlying device-independent bitmap representation is commonly called a DIB: it consists of a DIB header, optional color information, and pixel data, describing the image independently of the display device; a BMP file wraps such a DIB in an additional 14-byte file header. It originated in the closely linked early development of Microsoft Windows and OS/2, whose bitmap formats were at first identical;; used by the GDI subsystem of both platforms, it is sometimes called the Windows and OS/2 bitmap file format and is usually named with the file extension .bmp or .dib. The BMP file format is capable of storing two-dimensional digital images in various color depths, and optionally with data compression, alpha channels, and color profiles. The format's simplicity, its familiarity on Windows, and its status as a relatively well-documented, open format have made it very widely supported, so that image-processing programs on many operating systems can read and write BMP files. The same bitmap structure is embedded in related Windows formats: ICO and CUR files, for example, contain images that begin with a BITMAPINFOHEADER. Because uncompressed BMP files hold a great deal of redundant data, they can often be reduced substantially by general-purpose lossless compression such as ZIP or RAR. The bitmap header structures were documented from the outset in Microsoft's general Windows and OS/2 programmer's references rather than in a specification dedicated to BMP alone; a formal specification of the same structures, using normative language, was only later folded into the Windows Metafile (WMF) specification, which Microsoft placed under its Open Specification Promise.
