MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Hello Neighbor

Hello Neighbor (stylised as Hello, Neighbor!) is a 2017 Russian stealth thriller game originally developed by Dynamic Pixels, now developed by Eerie Guest Studios and published by tinyBuild. Initially released as public alphas from 2016 to 2017, it received a full release for Windows and Xbox One on 8 December 2017, later for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android on 26 July 2018, and for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on 27 March 2026. The player controls Nicky Roth, who witnesses strange happenings at the house of his next-door neighbor, Theodore Peterson. His goal is to successfully sneak into the basement of the house to uncover a dark secret while avoiding being caught by Theodore. One of the main selling points of the game was the neighbor's artificial intelligence (AI) that changed behavior based on the player's past actions, such as setting bear traps along the player's path in a previous attempt, putting water bucket traps above doors the player has used and setting up surveillance cameras in areas the player has consistently visited. While the initial alpha versions of Hello Neighbor were received positively, the final product was met with ambiguous reviews. The gameplay, puzzles, control scheme and technical performance were heavily criticized, but the story elements and art style were praised. The game spawned a franchise, beginning with a prequel, Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek, released in December 2018. Two multiplayer spin-offs, Secret Neighbor and Hello Engineer, were released in October 2019 and October 2021, respectively. A standalone sequel, Hello Neighbor 2, was released in December 2022. A second sequel, Hello Neighbor 3, is in development. In July 2026, it was announced that a possible collaboration with the video game Fortnite was in the works.
