Wilmington, North Carolina once had a thriving Black middle class and an elected interracial government. In 1898 white supremacists used violence to overthrow that government, kill Black residents and drive many others from the city.

Loki is a god in Norse mythology. Loki engineers the death of the beloved god Baldr and is bound by the gods and suffers from serpent venom. His wife Sigyn collects the venom in a bowl. However, she must empty the bowl when it is full and the venom that drips in the meantime causes Loki to writhe in pain, thereby causing earthquakes. As part of the events of Ragnarök, Loki is foretold to eventually break free from his bonds and, among the forces of the jötnar, to go to battle with the gods, during which time he and his monstrous children play a key role in the destruction of humanity down to all but two humans. Loki has a particular enmity with the god Heimdallr, and they are foretold to kill one another during Ragnarök. He is the son of Fárbauti (a jötunn) and Laufey (a goddess), and the brother of Helblindi and Býleistr. Loki is married to the goddess Sigyn and they have two sons, Narfi or Nari and Váli. By the jötunn Angrboða, Loki is the father of Hel, the wolf Fenrir and the world serpent Jörmungandr. In the form of a mare, Loki was chased down and impregnated by the stallion Svaðilfari and gave birth to the eight-legged horse Sleipnir. Like other gods, Loki is a shape shifter. In addition to the shape of a mare, he appears in the form of a salmon, a fly, and possibly an elderly woman named Þökk (Old Norse 'thanks'). Loki is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources: the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, composed or compiled in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson; the Norwegian Rune Poem, in the poetry of skalds, and in Scandinavian folklore. Loki may be depicted with his mouth stitched closed on the Snaptun Stone, and bound on the Kirkby Stephen Stone and the Gosforth Cross. Scholars have debated Loki's origins and role in Norse mythology, noting that he is unlikely to have received any kind of veneration but played a notable role in myth. Some have described him as a trickster god. Loki has been depicted in, or referenced in, a variety of media in modern popular culture.
In cryptography, LOKI89 and LOKI91 are symmetric-key block ciphers designed as possible replacements for the Data Encryption Standard (DES). The ciphers were developed based on a body of work analysing DES, and are very similar to DES in structure. The LOKI algorithms were named for Loki, the god of mischief in Norse mythology.
In Norse mythology, Útgarða-Loki (Anglicized as Utgarda-Loki, Utgard-Loki, and Utgardsloki) is the ruler of the castle Útgarðr in Jötunheimr. He is one of the jötnar and his name means literally "Loki of the Outyards" or "Loki of the Outlands", to distinguish him from Loki. He was also known as Skrýmir or Skrymir.
Loki Laufeyson, later known through adoption as Loki Odinson, is a character portrayed by Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise, based on the Marvel Comics character and Norse mythological deity of the same name. He is depicted as the God of Mischief and initially nemesis to his adopted brother, Thor. Raised as a master of Asgardian magic and sorcery, Loki plots to take the Asgardian throne from Thor. After that fails, he attempts to conquer Earth, inadvertently driving the formation of the Avengers, but is imprisoned in Asgard. He briefly replaces his adoptive father, Odin, as Asgard's ruler, then turns antihero and helps his brother save the planet from their sister Hela, before being killed by Thanos. An alternate version of Loki from 2012 is recruited by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and encounters other versions of himself, including a female version named Sylvie, with whom he falls in love. They work together with TVA members Mobius, Hunter B-15 and Ouroboros to stop He Who Remains. The alternate version of Loki later sacrifices himself to watch over and maintain the multiverse. As of 2024, Loki has become a staple in the MCU appearing in seven films, beginning with Thor (2011). Alternate versions of the character starred in the Disney+ television series Loki (2021–2023) and appeared in What If...? (2021–2024). He is considered a fan-favorite character in the franchise; Hiddleston's performance has received critical acclaim from critics and audiences.
Before the 1921 destruction of Tulsa’s Greenwood District, Black residents had created a remarkable center of business and community life. The district included stores, professional offices, entertainment venues and homes owned by Black citizens. Understanding Greenwood means learning what was built—not only what was burned.
