MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

There is a zipper going down the front center of the jacket and there is a zipper pocket on either side of the jacket. The zippers are white, and the zipper pulls are a silver-colored metal with the Lululemon logo on them. The jacket is made of a moisture wicking material and there is mesh under the armpits for breathability. There are several curved seams on the front and back of the jacket which give the body a sleeker shape. The jacket has a standup collar and a v-shaped neckline when partially zipped. The zipper can go all the way up to the top of the collar. There is a small silver colored Lululemon logo on the back of the jacket at the bottom. The hemline of the jacket is slightly longer and more rounded in the back. The lining of the front of the jacket is tan. There is a white manufacturer’s label inside the jacket at the back of the neck. It is long and vertical. There is black text going down it which reads [2 / lululemon / athletica / Designed in / Vancouver / Made in / Vietnam]. Followed by the materials of the body, the contrast, and the lining. .2 Black Lululemon workout pants. The cropped pants are ¾ length. There is a wide waistband at the top with two horizontal seams below it, going around the pants. There is an arc shaped design at the bottom of each pant leg. The proper right shape starts at the outer ankle and curves up towards the inner calf. The proper left shape starts at the inner calf and curves down towards the outer ankle. There is a horizontal belt-loop like piece of fabric in the inside of the leggings at the stomach. There are two small interior pockets as the waistband. There is a white manufacturer’s label inside the jacket at the back of the neck. It is long and vertical. There is black text going down it which reads [6 / lululemon / athletica / Designed in / Vancouver / Made in / Singapore]. Followed by the materials of the body, contrast 1, contrast 2, contrast 3, and the lining. They are all made of a combination of nylon and spandex. There are washing instructions below. There is a horizontal zipper pocket on the back of the pants on the waistband. There are curved seams at the back of each thigh. The curved arc shapes are on the bottoms of the backs of the pant legs. There is a silver colored Lululemon logo on the left leg near the bottom.
.3 White Lululemon sports bra. The bra has a simple design on the front. There is a slight scoop neckline, and it has solid white medium width straps. The straps become more intricate in the back of the bra. Each strap turns into a thinner double strap. The double straps crisscross and form a negative space diamond and two triangles above the backstrap. There is a silver colored Lululemon logo below the diamond. The lining of the bra is tan mesh. There are no tags inside the bra.
All three pieces appear to be in good condition with no loose strings, stains, holes, etc.
