MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Peter Hummelgaard Thomsen (born 17 January 1983) is a Danish writer and politician, who is a member of the Folketing for the Social Democrats political party. He was the Minister for Employment from 2019 to 2022, the Minister of Justice from 2022 to 2026 and Minister of Finance since 2026. He was elected into parliament in the 2015 Danish general election. He is a chief architect of the Regulation to Prevent and Combat Child Sexual Abuse (Chat Control) proposal.

Background

[edit]

Hummelgaard was born in Tårnby to Jan Thomsen and Susanne Pedersen.[1]

Political career

[edit]
Hummelgaard in parliament with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 2025

Hummelgaard was elected member of Folketinget for the Social Democrats in the 2015 election and reelected in 2019. After the 2019 election, the Social Democrats formed a government and Hummelgaard was appointed Minister for Employment in the Frederiksen Cabinet. After Mogens Jensen stepped down as Minister of Food, Fisheries and Gender Equality the cabinet underwent a slight shuffle. In this shuffle, Hummelgaard was appointed Minister of Gender Equality in addition to Minister of Employment.[2][3]

In 2018 his book Den Syge Kapitalisme (The Sick Capitalism) was published. In it, he describes a new social contract between different groups in society to fight for a more just society.[4]

Controversies

[edit]

Hummelgaard's opposition to consumers being able to encrypt messages has drawn concern from privacy rights activists in the European Union. Hummelgaard denies encryption is a civil liberty and advocates for others to follow suit.[5]

Peter Thiel

Peter Andreas Thiel ( ; born 11 October 1967) is a German-American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and conservative political activist. A co-founder of PayPal, Palantir Technologies and Founders Fund, he was also the first outside investor in Facebook. As of October 2026, Forbes estimated Thiel's net worth at US$37.7 billion. Born in Germany, Thiel moved to the US with his parents when he was an infant. In 1971, his family moved to South African-occupied Namibia, before moving back to the US in 1977. After graduating from Stanford University, Thiel worked as a clerk, a securities lawyer, a speechwriter, and a derivatives trader at Credit Suisse. He founded Thiel Capital Management in 1996 and co-founded PayPal with Max Levchin and Luke Nosek in 1998. He was PayPal's chief executive officer until its sale to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. Thiel then founded Clarium Capital, a global macro hedge fund based in San Francisco. He launched Palantir in 2003, a big data analysis company, and has been its chairman since then. In August 2004, Thiel became Facebook's first outside investor by acquiring a 10.2% stake in the company for $500,000. In 2005, he launched Founders Fund with PayPal partners Ken Howery and Luke Nosek. He co-founded Valar Ventures in 2010, founded Thiel Capital in 2011, co-founded Mithril Capital in 2012, was investment committee chair in 2012, and was a part-time partner at Y Combinator from 2015 to 2017. He was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2011, which became controversial when made public in 2017. Through the Thiel Foundation, he governs the grant-making bodies Breakout Labs and Thiel Fellowship. Thiel has been variously portrayed as a conservative libertarian and democracy-skeptic authoritarian, and he has made substantial donations to American right-wing figures and causes. Commentators and scholars frequently examine his views, particularly his political and ideological positions. He has been described as "a political theologian operating at the heart of the Silicon Valley" and the "intellectual architect of Silicon Valley's contemporary ethos".
