MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

  10. ^ There are two: the main page and the swap page.
  11. ^ Helicon Filter does not implement layers, but it can insert frames and editable text, and objects from one photo can be brushed into the main photo.
  12. ^ Although Helicon Filter does not support actual scripting, it is capable of storing and reusing sequences and settings of edits.
  13. ^ iPhoto can be scripted using Automator and AppleScript.
  14. ^ Photos can be scripted using Automator and AppleScript.
  15. ^ If images are perfectly aligned, Picasa can create a Multi-Exposure Collage which effectively makes a simple HDR with little customization, though brightness has to be corrected afterwards with no bit depth increase.
  16. ^ Zoner Photo Studio 11 supports one temporary layer.
  17. ^ Zoner Photo Studio does not actually support scripting, but it can store and reuse sequences of filters with preset parameters (Batch Filter).
  18. ^ a b Split to channels.
  19. ^ Photoshop requires an optional plug-in from the installation disc to support JPEG 2000.

  26. ^ GraphicConverter requires macOS or later with installed Image Magick application of the Fink package or any other distribution in order to support XCF.
  27. ^ Microsoft Office Picture Manager and Paint.NET only support TIFF for viewing and editing of the first page.
  28. ^ a b MS Paint does not support transparency in GIF or PNG.
  29. ^ PSD is supported only in openCanvas 4 Plus, not regular openCanvas 4.
  30. ^ Paint.NET 3.08 supports import/export of images in HD Photo lossy & lossless format via a file-type plug-in based on a Microsoft HD Photo specification; it expires on September 1, 2007 or if the Paint.NET version is 3.20 or higher. The developers hope tentatively plan to implement full HD Photo support by version 3.20.
  31. ^ For the BMP, JPEG and PNG formats, the user is sandboxed in an interface that does not permit file system interaction, including viewing of filenames and the choice of a file's name, type, or location. Files are selected by thumbnails, and may only be loaded from one predetermined directory.

OpenRaster

OpenRaster is a file format proposed for the common exchange of layered images between raster graphics editors. It is meant as a replacement for later versions of the Adobe PSD format. OpenRaster is still in development and so far is supported by a few programs. The default file extension for OpenRaster files is ".ora".

Image editing

Image editing encompasses the processes of altering images, whether they are digital photographs, traditional photo-chemical photographs, or illustrations. Traditional analog image editing is known as photo retouching, using tools such as an airbrush to modify photographs or edit illustrations with any traditional art medium. Graphic software programs, which can be broadly grouped into vector graphics editors, raster graphics editors, and 3D modelers, are the primary tools with which a user may manipulate, enhance, and transform images. Many image editing programs are also used to render or create computer art from scratch. The term "image editing" usually refers only to the editing of 2D images, not 3D ones.

Picture Publisher

Picture Publisher is a raster graphics editor originally developed by Astral Development for Microsoft Windows in 1989. In 1991, Micrografx acquired Astral and took over development of Picture Publisher, giving it a massive overhaul for its third version. It was one of the first graphics editors for Windows and was lauded by technology journalists for its versatility. Among Windows-based graphics editors, it competed with ZSoft's Publisher's Paintbrush and Aldus' PhotoStyler.
