MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

RiskLab is a laboratory that conducts research in financial risk management.

The first RiskLab was created in 1994 at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich in Zurich, Switzerland. The ethos of all existing RiskLabs is a fusion of academic research, industrial innovation and governmental oversight in financial risk management.

In 1996, another RiskLab was created independently at the University of Toronto, this time sponsored by the private company Algorithmics Incorporated.[1]

Shortly afterwards, and also in partnership with Algorithmics Inc, other RiskLabs were created in Munich (1997), at Cornell University (1998), at University of Cambridge (1998), at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (2000),Cyprus International Institute of Management in Nicosia (2001), and Florida International University (2023).

In 2005, RiskLab Toronto,[2] a divisional center at the University of Toronto, was featured in Research Means Business,[3] a directory of "cutting-edge research leading to industrial innovation and the creation of new business enterprises" published by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Risklab China Research Center was also created in 2006.

In October 2007, RiskLab was the NSERC Synergy Award for Innovation. The award was delivered by Dr. Colin Carrie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and by Dr. Suzanne Fortier, President of NSERC.

In 2010, growing out of the RiskLab international network, RiskLabs built the strategic alliance named RiskLab Global.

In 2013, a Finnish section of Risklab was independently created at Åbo Akademi University in Turku and Arcada University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki.

In 2022, the Miami Chapter of RiskLab was created at Florida International University. This chapter focuses on cutting-edge research leading to industrial innovation and the collaboration with business enterprises. They focus on providing their students with knowledge for resumes and interviews preparations, while finding information about internships and experience from people that are directly working in the industry.

RiskLab Australia at CSIRO's Data61 was launched in 2015, based in Melbourne. RiskLab Australia at CSIRO's Data61 is a multi-disciplinary R&D centre for developing the latest methodologies and technologies in actuarial sciences, econometrics, applied math and statistics as well as financial mathematics.

ICMA Centre

The International Capital Market Association Centre (or ICMA Centre) is a department of the Henley Business School within the University of Reading, based in the English town of Reading, Berkshire. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education tailored to the capital markets industry. Established in 1991 with funding provided by the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) in Zurich through a partnership with the University of Reading, the centre is housed in a purpose-built modernist building, and was formally opened in March 1998 by Sir Brian Unwin, then President of the European Investment Bank. The centre's facilities include three dealing rooms where students learn how markets function and apply theory through simulations. The centre also provides two lecture theatres, several seminar rooms, information seating area and café bar. The upper floor of the centre houses the administrative and academic staff and doctoral researchers. In 2008, ICMA invested a further £5 million, which funded an expansion to the building. The extension includes the flagship 40 seat dealing room - the largest in Europe – which is sponsored in part by Thomson Reuters, as well as a 170-seat lecture theatre, new seminar rooms and a dedicated research area. The building is fitted with audio and visual technology allowing the podcasting and webstreaming of lecture content. The new building opened for students at the start of the 2009–2010 academic session. ICMA's investment in the centre now totals over £10 million, making it the largest single corporate investment in any European business school.
