MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Spectrum Animation

Spectrum Animation was an animation studio in Japan, made up of former TMS Entertainment employees. Spectrum animated several episodes of Batman: The Animated Series.

On the commentary track for "Heart of Ice" on the Batman: The Animated Series, Volume One DVD, producer Bruce Timm stated that Spectrum was responsible for airbrushing Mr. Freeze's helmet in every frame that featured him. Such attention to detail ultimately drove the studio to bankruptcy; most of their staff members are now working for Production I.G.

Frank Paur (director, "Vendetta", Batman: The Animated Series) praised Spectrum's animation. "We wanted to keep the show heavy on the mist, the rain. I wanted reflections, mist, gentle rain to play up the whole motif. I was really worried at first that it would go to a bad studio."[1]

Moreover, Spectrum was credited for providing overseas animation work for a few DIC Entertainment productions such as Captain N: The Game Master (2nd season), Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures, and Madeline.

The episodes of Batman: The Animated Series that were animated by Spectrum Animation Studio are:

Emmy Award – Robin's Reckoning, Part 1
1993 Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour)

Layout services

[edit]

Spectrum Animation provided layout services for the following episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. However, Dong Yang did the animation for these episodes.

  • "Almost Got 'I'm"
  • "See No Evil"
  • "The Laughing Fish"
  • "Robin's Reckoning, Part 2"
  • "Tyger Tyger"
  • "Zatanna"
  • "Shadow of the Bat, Part 1"
  • "Shadow of the Bat, Part 2"
  • "His Silicon Soul"
  • "Fire from Olympus"
  • "The Worry Men"
  • "Sideshow"

Spectrum and Dong Yang Animation both worked on the animation for the feature film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Dong Yang did the animation for Mask of the Phantasm, and Spectrum did the layout services.

Spectrum analyzer

A spectrum analyzer measures the magnitude of an input signal versus frequency within the full frequency range of the instrument. The primary use is to measure the power of the spectrum of known and unknown signals. The input signal that most common spectrum analyzers measure is electrical; however, spectral compositions of other signals, such as acoustic pressure waves and optical light waves, can be considered through the use of an appropriate transducer. Spectrum analyzers for other types of signals also exist, such as optical spectrum analyzers which use direct optical techniques such as a monochromator to make measurements. By analyzing the spectra of electrical signals, dominant frequency, power, distortion, harmonics, bandwidth, and other spectral components of a signal can be observed that are not easily detectable in time domain waveforms. These parameters are useful in the characterization of electronic devices, such as wireless transmitters. The display of a spectrum analyzer has the amplitude on the vertical axis and frequency displayed on the horizontal axis. To the casual observer, a spectrum analyzer looks like an oscilloscope, which plots amplitude on the vertical axis but time on the horizontal axis. In fact, some lab instruments can function either as an oscilloscope or a spectrum analyzer.
