MY'STORY

The MOVE Fire

This is a personal recollection on the Move fire on May 13, 1985 Philadelphia police fired thousands of rounds at the MOVE house, city officials approved dropping an explosive device on the roof, the resulting fire was allowed to burn, 11 people—including five children—died, and 61 homes were destroyed. Philadelphia City Council later called it a “brutal attack carried out by the City of Philadelphia on its own citizens” and acknowledged that no individual faced criminal consequences for the bombing. One timeline correction worth preserving for the BHP record: the major previous MOVE-police confrontation was August 8, 1978, about seven years before the bombing, not a year or two earlier. Officer James Ramp was killed, other police and firefighters were wounded, nine MOVE members were later convicted, and television cameras recorded police beating Delbert Africa during his arrest. The 1985 MOVE Commission later specifically criticized city planners for failing to adequately use lessons from that 1978 confrontation. And that actually strengthens the point you’re making: 1985 did not happen without precedent or institutional memory. There had already been a deadly confrontation with MOVE, years of conflict, negotiations and police involvement before Osage Avenue.

Synergy (software)

Synergy is a software application for sharing a keyboard and mouse between multiple computers. It is used in situations where several PCs are used together, with a monitor connected to each, but are to be controlled by one user. The user needs only one keyboard and mouse on the desk—similar to a KVM switch without the video. Partly open source and partly closed source, the open source components are released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, which is free software. The first version of Synergy was created on May 13, 2001, by Chris Schoeneman and worked with the X Window System only. Synergy now supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and other Unix-like operating systems.

Predix (software)

Predix was an industrial IoT software PaaS developed by GE Digital, the software and services division of General Electric, that provided edge-to-cloud data connectivity and analytics and services to support industrial applications. Although initially considered a pioneering move by GE in the IoT and Industry 4.0 space, the platform came to be widely regarded as a critical failure for GE's digital business and chief contributing factor in the breakup of the GE conglomerate as a whole in 2024. Over the course of Predix' development and launch, GE invested over $7 billion into consulting teams, hiring and training software developers, and additional support services for the platform, with then-GE Chief Digital Officer Bill Ruh forecasting in 2016 that the software business, with Predix at the helm, would generate at least $15 billion in revenue by 2020. Due to a mixture of overreliance on expensive external consulting teams, overhiring, primarily marketing Predix to internal business units rather than targeting external customers, poor synergy between Predix and existing business units, lack of unifying vision and collaboration, and struggles within GE to adapt from industrial manufacturing to a Silicon Valley startup culture, the platform failed to perform as predicted. In 2021, GE CEO Larry Culp announced the breakup of GE, with GE Digital being absorbed into GE Vernova in 2023 in advance of the spinoff the following year. In 2022, the Predix name was retired, and key elements of it were relegated to a smaller role within the software business, rebranded under the cloud-based Asset Performance Management suite.
